Dr. Biswarup Purkayastha

Dr. Biswarup Purkayastha is an accomplished Cardiothoracic Surgeon offering the complete spectrum of adult cardiothoracic surgery with a special focus on mechanical circulatory support and heart–lung transplantation.

After completing his MBBS in 2012 in India, he pursued a six-year Doctorate in Cardiothoracic Surgery (DrNB) from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, India, and became board certified in 2019.

He received his foundational training in cardiothoracic surgery at the esteemed Narayana Hrudayalaya Rabindranath Tagore Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Kolkata, and later worked with leading hospitals including KIMS Hyderabad, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital Mumbai, Medanta Lucknow, and B. M. Birla Kolkata.

Dr. Biswarup earned the prestigious Greenlane Fellowship in Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart–Lung Transplants at Auckland, New Zealand—Australasia’s largest cardiothoracic unit—where he gained advanced experience in heart–lung transplantation, aortic surgery, and mechanical circulatory support systems.

His training included advanced procurement and preservation techniques using XViVO, Paragonix, and TransMedics OCS, as well as extensive work with ventricular assist devices (VADs) like HeartMate 3 and HeartWare.

He further advanced his expertise through the Toronto–Vienna Lung Transplant Academy Program and achieved ELSO 101 and Level 1 certifications in ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation).

Dr. Biswarup has extensive hands-on experience managing complex aortic pathologies including aneurysms, dissections, and extensive aortic repairs using hybrid and open surgical techniques such as hemi-arch, total arch, valve-sparing root replacement, and Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) procedures.

Upon returning to India, he joined Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, where he helped establish their lung transplant program, and now serves at Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital, Aurangabad, continuing his work in advanced cardiac and thoracic surgery.

He attributes a large part of his success to mentorship under Dr. Sandeep Attawar, one of Asia’s foremost heart–lung transplant surgeons with over 500 transplants to his name. Under his guidance, Dr. Biswarup continues to refine his expertise and contribute to life-saving cardiothoracic procedures.
